Ignore this. Just moving this as the only original note on my Facebook and placing it here for archiving.
Because I just had to write this. Not trying to be like a wannabe reviewer or anything. (Not to name any names of people who are...)
Just for some background info, for my previous entry concerning my opinion on the Twilight franchise see this note.
So I went into seeing New Moon today without any enthusiasm. I was pretty indifferent about the whole thing. No squealing over-excitement, nothing.
Straight away when it started I could see it was going to be extremely different in quality from Twilight. Twilight began rather randomly in the introduction when it started. New Moon began with the preface that was at the start of the book, the cut scene from the middle of the movie which makes no sense without context but perfectly foreshadows everything to come. And then after that scene, it jumps right into the dream sequence that starts the book also!
That was what made me realise, this director (who I still don't know the name of, but must look up) knew what he was doing and what fans wanted and I was amazed. Yes, I was amazed.
Now my memory of the book isn't that great, but from what I can remember, there was no added in pointless bullshit and no crucially important scenes missing. There were a few things missing I would have loved to see, but they weren't present due to Catherine Hardwicke, the idiotic director of Twilight, leaving them out of the first movie, so placing them in this one would make no sense. For example, I would have loved to see Lauren and how she reacted to Bella. But Lauren didn't exist in the first movie so she would in no way fit in or work in the second one without the back story that was needed in the first one.
Now on a more movie-quality side of things, the special effects were amazing. The wolf transformations were extraordinary and every fight scene had me mesmerized. What had me mesmerized in Twilight? Pfft, probably nothing since I can't even remember anything that did. The music was brilliant even though I didn't know every song and the words to it like I did with the last movie. But I will be definitely checking them out now.
And my god, I actually found this movie funny! The books are funny at times, but when I saw Twilight I'm pretty sure I didn't have any LOL moments. The moments I laughed in New Moon were endless. The jokes from New Moon were there, and even some extra ones, which I don't mind because if the extra stuff is beneficial it's good. (Unlike Catherine Hardwicke's useless extra scenes which broke the continuity of the books!)
Now, some negatives. Don't worry, there are few. I wish they did the Romeo and Juliet parallels more. It was great she had the book, but I really loved those parallels in the book. Bella's constant comparing of herself as Juliet and Edward as Romeo were amazing in the book and I kinda missed them in the movie. Oh and my favourite part of the book was always when Edward was about to reveal himself as a vampire and Bella shows up and he believes he has gone to heaven because she's there. Unfortunately, they left that part out and I was looking forward to it.
And then there are the few lines and scenes which were kinda bad due to the seriously bad delivery from the actors. Bella's cringe-worthy "Kiss me!" while raising her eyebrow and most of Edward just generally talking.
And finally, there's the thing I spent the whole movie debating over since my faith had been restored. Whose team was I on? Well my opinion on Edward has remained the same. He's a massive douche (and a fairy). So I knew I wasn't siding with him anymore. But I don't know if I'd call myself Team Jacob. I must say I had an argument with my head during the scene where Bella and Jacob were on the verge of kissing in which I was screaming in my head, "Kissssssssss!" before I reminded myself, "No! They can't! They aren't supposed to in this movie!" Plus, Edward revolted me when he took his shirt off (the glitter didn't help either) and Jacob didn't at all. But in the larger scheme of the vampires vs. the werewolves, I'm vampires easy. The other werewolves bug me and I love Alice and Jasper and Emmett. So I'm Team Vampire but not Team Edward, Semi-Team Jacob but not Team Werewolf. Make sense? :/
I think I've covered everything.
Oh, and the Volturi were freaking terrifying!
Just looked up the director and Chris Weitz, well done. You have saved this series from becoming victim of Books-That-Were-Good-With-Crappy-Different-Movie-Remakes.
