Joss Whedon is a writer, director, exec producer and superhero. He created the shows Buffy, Angel and Firefly as well as the movie Serenity and the online movie Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. And now, my naieve young friends, he has a new TV series which premiered just last week called Dollhouse.
Now you may ask, "What's so special about all that?"
You must watch his shows to understand. Seriously.
Joss puts new meaning to quality television. Hilarious dialogue, great consistent character development, well planned out storylines and amazing scenes which make you cry for your life.
And that's an understatement of Joss' awesomeness. I just can't word it right, is all.
Now for those of you who criticize Buffy, have you actually watched it? I doubt you have.
I challenge you simple-minded people to be dazzled by the Joss. Watch some Buffy, Angel, Firefly or Serenity. I will lend them to you, if I'm not already.
Anyway, to further my argument, I thought I'd elaborate on the various Whedon shows.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
From http://fantasy-tv.suite101.com/article.cfm/buffy_the_vampire_slayer
One of the hit television shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s, BTVS [abbreviation used by fans] has been both the source of great controversy and also great social change in the American media. These two shows have been a great influence not only for teenagers but for the media itself, spurring change such as portrayals of sexual orientation and body image.Angel
Plot:
Buffy Summers is a new transfer student from LA and seems like a regular beach blonde airhead with great fashion sense. However, that’s not the case. Buffy Summers is in fact...a vampire slayer! She spends her nights patrolling graveyards and staking vampires, her days studying and trying to not get kicked out of school while balancing slaying and homework. The librarian is her watcher or guide and she has a small group of friends who help her out.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_(TV_series)
The show details the ongoing trials of Angel, a vampire whose human soul was restored to him by gypsies as a punishment for the murder of one of their own. After more than a century of murder and the torture of innocents, Angel's restored soul torments him with guilt and remorse. During the first four seasons of the show, he works as a private detective in a fictionalized version of Los Angeles, California, where he and a variety of associates work to "help the helpless" and to restore the faith and save the souls of those who have lost their way. Typically, this involves doing battle with evil demons or demonically-allied humans, primarily related to the law firm, Wolfram & Hart. He also has to battle his own demonic ghosts.Firefly
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(TV_series)
The series is set in the year 2517, after humans have arrived at a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things".Serenity
The show explores the lives of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and now make a living on the outskirts of the society, as well as the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In addition, it is a future where the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures as well. According to Whedon's vision, "nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today."
The show Firefly was unfairly treated by it's television network and was axed before even airing all of the episodes made. Therefore, Firefly only ever had 14 episodes. But with the success of DVD sales from Firefly, Joss made the movie Serenity, which continued from Firefly and gave the fans the ending they deserved. So if you're interested in watching Firefly/Serenity, watch the series before the movie.
Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog
Dr Horrible is a 40 minute movie that was created during the writer's strike by, yup, Joss Whedon. Dr Horrible was released on the Internet and later on, on DVD.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Horrible%27s_Sing-Along_Blog:
It tells the story of Dr. Horrible, the aspiring supervillain alter ego of Billy; Captain Hammer, his nemesis; and Penny, their mutual love interest.
Just trust me. Joss is worth giving a shot.
Your blogger,
Miss Alexiness.
